Are Big Tires and Small Fenders Illegal?

Local law enforcement cracking down on big tire sizes and small fenders

Your large tires could be illegal

As the popularity of off-road vehicles like pickup trucks and Jeeps continues to surge local law enforcement has been forced to crackdown on what has traditionally been overlooked, your tires. Those knobby tires look cool and work great off-road but many states have laws on the books that say you have to have so much fender or even fender and mud flaps on your vehicle. All this has us asking, are big tires and small fenders illegal?

Driving around in the great state of Washington? Then you just might want to familiarize yourself with this, “No person may operate any motor vehicle that is not equipped with fenders, covers, flaps, or splash aprons adequate for minimizing the spray or splash of water or mud from the roadway to the rear of the vehicle.” Source

You'll find similar laws on the books in Alaska, California, Connecticut, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah (sorry Moab) and West Virginia.

This may not be the reason you get pulled over, or maybe it is if your wheels are that big or your fenders are that small. So how do you combat against this legal issue preventing you from slapping all that meat on your wheels? One is moderation, but who needs that?! We fall on the side against small fenders, it makes for a mean look sure, but it's a simple mod to your stock fenders or choosing the right replacements that means you get out of a ticket. We even make what we refer to as Tactical Jeep Wrangler Fender Flares for the JK and JKU. They install using factory bolt holes, look great and are made of solid stainless steel.

"What about trucks?!" Good question! We're always considering new product designs but it really comes down to you. What do you want to see? Let us know in the comments below what kind of products you'd like us to make.

Do you think it's ok to have huge tires and tiny fenders? Or are you on the side of big tires deserve equally sized fenders? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
