Here’s How The Corvette Changed Over The Years

Whenever you are competing with other American auto brands, the changing tastes of the market, and of course various European style car brands, you need to keep changing. For the company Chevrolet that made Corvettes, they did continue to change and innovate in order to make sure that they were prepared to handle everything and keep their cars relevant for the 70 years they’ve been in business together.
 
There have been a ton of changes in the world of Corvettes, and there are plenty of technological innovations that have made sure that Corvettes are going to keep on sticking around!

Independent Rear Suspension

The first couple of Corvettes were released in the same style as many of the monster cars and trucks of the time, with a solid rear axle supported by leaf springs, and that wasn’t always the best choice for a sports car. So in 1963, the Corvette’s engineers began to focus on creating their own Independent Rear Suspension, which was bolted under the C2 Corvette split window.
 
This allowed the rear wheels to move independently of one another, allowing for a massive increase in how the car is handled and turned. The transverse leaf spring also was created, which gives some strength and durability to the axle. The transverse leaf has been used in every Corvette since then, so the change has stuck around.

The Changing Of The Frame

A lot of other changes occurred during the move between the first generation and the fifth generation, but one thing remained the same… the steel ladder type frame. But with the C5 corvette frame, the changes started to fully occur. The welding process quickly stopped being used, and sections of tubing were closed off at each end. Then these tubes were filled with high-pressure water and could be twisted into the desired shape.
 
Then when the C6 was released, the frame changed again to have an aluminum chassis to increase the rigidity and reduce the weight. This reduced the weight and increased the rigidity, further allowing for increased speed better handling.

The L5 Engine

Finally, the aluminum engine of the L5 motor had united with the Corvette, and it was able to bring the Corvette into the modern age with its durability, how easy it was to maintain, and the sheer power it could bring to the car. It’s a big engine that was unlike anything the car had ever seen.
 
While many engines have come and gone since then, the L5 is the one that allowed a Corvette to have true speed.
