Understanding The Difference Between A Stingray and A Corvette
If you have spent time around Corvettes for any length of time, you know that a Stingray is one word that you will hear about often. But what is a Stingray? Is it a Corvette? And if there is a difference, how do you know it? Plus, what is the deal with the words Sting Ray that is different from the Stingray?

Here’s all you need to know about how the Stingray entered the world of the Corvette!

First, The Sting Ray Origin

One of the biggest things that you need to know is the difference between the Stingray and the Sting Ray. Because there is a difference and you can’t make that mistake on the wrong forum! The two word String Ray nickname was used in 1963 to mark the redesign of several classic Corvettes, where the front, chassis, and rear suspension were redesigned, and a hardtop coupe was added.

The smoother design and aquatic like features gave the car style the nickname, and more Corvettes would be made with that same design.

Becoming One Word

Eventually, in 1969, while some elements of the earlier design were present, a new door handle mechanism and a smoother front with a larger top made the 1969 Corvette different. Also, a Stingray (one word) emblem was on each fender of the vehicle, and the Stingray badge would remain on the Corvette until 1976, before it vanished in 1977.

While all Corvettes are not Stingrays, all Stingrays are Corvettes, and the naming really focuses on when the car was made and elements of its design rather than anything else. Depending on the manufacturer year of the car you purchased, you might have a Stingray, Sting Ray, or just a plain old Corvette.

At the end of the day, it is just a name, and while you might find people willing to fight over which name is better or what year model of the Corvette is a true Stingray, it often isn’t anything worth fighting over. It’s a fantastic Corvette that looks amazing no matter what, and like all Corvettes it is fun to drive.
